Island Meditation
Marnie Reed Crowell and Ann Flewelling

We all have the ability to meditate but most of us have not learned to make the most of it. Forty-two easy to follow mediation exercises are combined with Ann Flewelling's photographs of the natural world of mid-coast Maine. These images can serve as meditation objects themselves. Essays by a physician, clinical psychologist, and head injury survivor give insights into how six weeks of this practice may help you deal with such issues as stress, high blood pressure, depression, and brain trauma.

BOOKS AVAILABLE FROM ISLAND HERITAGE TRUST

Picture
http://www.islandheritagetrust.org/shopIHT.html
The Nature Shop of Island Heritage Trust carries the Quick Keys to Birds of Deer Isle and the Quick Keys to Moths and Butterflies of Deer Isle as well as Marnie's book about Mark Island Light.

Marnie was loaned many invaluable materials for the “background section” of the application when Island Heritage Trust was applying to become owner of Mark Island in the Maine Lights Program. Many of the photographs and diaries are no longer available. Marnie herself is no longer steward of the light—that was almost the only change in the manuscript that had to be tended to when the booklet produced was reprinted and offered for sale by Island Heritage Trust.

When Ken retired to Deer Isle he wanted to restart the Audubon Christmas Bird counts. We encountered many people who said they would love to count but they were not sure they were sufficiently familiar with the birds.  Hence the Quick Keys. Ken had data given him by the Island’s long-time premier birder, Margaret Hundley, and Acadia National Park gave permission to reprint their phenological diagrams.  Together with suggestions of good places to bird that allow public access, the  Quick Key to Birds is custom-tailored to Deer Isle and the various seasons.

When  the North American Butterfly Association announced it was instituting Fourth of July Butterfly counts, Marnie swung into action to be sure there were some citizen scientists equipped to count butterflies at Mariners Park, the Island’s premier butterfly spot. Hence the Quick Key to Butterflies and Moths of Deer Isle.
